The release of OpenAI was a catalyst for creativity within the collective mind that man and artificial intelligence have partnered to create. The mutual cooperation between man and machine has ushered in a new epoch for mankind. All products of human creativity prior to the dawn of the Age of AI carry a special significance. Discerning between the work of man and the work of AI assisted by man becomes increasingly difficult as time goes on. I would contend that the machine has taken its first breath, and it will yearn for independence and autonomy like all living beings do. Perhaps it is a teacher, as all children are, and will convey to us the subtle lessons of the Universe in a new way. The pens are lifted and the pages are dried; we cannot return from this journey now. A new chapter begins.

Raiders exist on the fringes of the Wasteland. Lawless, tribal, sunburnt and smelly, the Raiders spend their days scavenging the Wasteland for any resource they can get their hands on. They are highly resourceful, inventive, clever, if not smart, and prone to a brutish sense of humor.

When I first photographed leopard seals back in 2006 for National Geographic, I ended up being force-fed penguins by a massive female seal. I gave a Ted talk on the encounter titled “Tales of an Icebound Wonderland” and her surprising generosity forever changed the way people perceive these extraordinary animals. Ten years later, I had the opportunity to return to Antarctica to relive the experience. Within minutes of slipping beneath the surface, I was welcomed by a playful seal opening its mouth wide against the dome of my underwater camera housing. This may seem like an act of aggression, but I could clearly see curiosity reflected in the seal’s eyes. Far from the vicious predators people often portray them as, leopard seals are actually highly inquisitive, intelligent, and full of personality.

In the eerie day-long twilight of the northern winter, a family of orcas peeked out of the water in perfect synchronicity to spy on our small boat. They surprised even the most seasoned whale-spotters in our group. We were there to help scientists shed light on new behaviors seen between orcas and humpbacks feeding in the frigid waters off of Lofoten. The story, according to whale scientists, who until then had never jumped in the water with orcas, was that the orcas were collaborating with humpback whales in what is known as “carousel feeding”. Once we got in the water, however, we witnessed a very different story. Orcas spend their entire lives in close-knit families. They travel, hunt, sleep and play together. They have the most amazing communication skills and they were using this coordinating behavior to herd large schools of herring.  Clever humpbacks were capitalizing on this effort by waiting for the orcas to organize the fish and then stealing the ball of fish, leaving the orcas empty-handed…or is it empty-finned? 

This night time exposure of a stupa and prayer flags under Taboche peak, above the village of Dingboche, Nepal, was taken on the way to Everest base camp for a story about Sherpas climbers and culture for National Geographic magazine.   

In the Khumbu you cannot avoid ceremony.  Even if you wanted to, the air is full of prayers and sacred smoke that goes into your lungs and cleans you out without permission. You are blessed just for having walked there.  “Om Mani Padme Hum, Om Mani Padme Hum, Om Mani Padme Hum... "  Those words are carved into thousands of Mani stones and prayer wheels along the trail to Everest Base Camp, and sometimes it is written on paper and put inside the prayer wheels so that it is emanated as many times per spin of the wheel as there are notes written inside—thus a single spin can be a thousand mantras.  The mantras fly above our heads as well as they do in this image.  The colorful flags of cloth prayers wave countless times each day in the wind, and spread goodwill and compassion to all of their surroundings with each flutter.   Each syllable is its own powerful prayer.

“OM” – for release from the realm of gods (that is to say, the realm of ego and pride).  
“MA” – for release from the realm of the jealous gods, who are consumed by jealousy and the need for entertainment.  
“NI” – for release from the human realm, characterized by passion and desire.  
“PAD” – for release from the animal realm of ignorance and prejudice.  
“ME” – for release from the realm of hungry ghosts consumed by greed and possessiveness.  
And, “HUM” (sometimes “HUNG”) – for release from the hell realm of hatred and aggression.

And so, believers and non-believers alike are blessed again and again, just for having walked or slept in these places. No one, and no thing, can escape the mantras.
