"Esqueje" is the Spanish equivalent of cutting or clone. This consists of a fragment of stem cut from a plant and introduced into the ground so that it can take root with the intention of reproducing it, thus generating new clones.

"Esquejes" is a generative system resulting from algorithmic gardening, which seeks to push the uniqueness of each pixel to the limit. "Esquejes" generates interesting shapes and textures using several layers of shaders. In this way, the work seeks to make each pixel different from its neighbor and not lose its individuality in the universe of synthetic images. Because if there are infinite numbers, there are infinite colors.

Optimistic nihilism embraces the idea that life's inherent meaninglessness is, in fact, positive. The conflict between intrinsic meaninglessness and our search for meaning is both absurd and liberating. We are free to create our own meaning yet ultimately, there is none. By acknowledging both the futility and the opportunity, we can find joy.

These images have no specific meaning yet often they seem purposed. Each output evokes an emotional tone, such as calm, erratic, troubled, bold, mysterious or cheerful. We are frequently reminded of something or can identify shapes like birds, houses or spaceships. Our innate tendency to find patterns and meaning is evident.

The algorithm uses geometry and rules but has been given as much freedom as possible to create varied compositions which contain both chaos and order. The compositions are constructed using node layouts, which are connected to form shapes. Connection is a recurrent theme in our pursuit of meaning - manifested in pattern formation, our relationships and the interconnectedness of the universe. The shapes are duplicated and modified through rotation, mirroring, and scaling to build up structure and chaotic form. If an output appears too sparse, an extra stage of manipulation is applied. Keypresses reveal the components, allowing viewers to observe the underlying mathematical structure of the composition. How does this insight influence our perception of meaning?

The meaning communicated by each piece is subjective, shaped by the viewer's own experiences interacting with the work. The artist aspires to connect with her audience by discovering the meanings they derive from the outputs we have yet to encounter.

Meaningless #14

Spaghetti Bones is a celebration of my adaptation and exploration of the differential growth technique. The idea is simple. You start with a string of nodes connected to one another to form a shape. Each node feels 3 forces:
 - A repulsion force from all other nodes
 - An attraction force towards its immediate neighbors
 - An attraction force towards the midpoint between its neighbors

As you add more nodes into the shape, these 3 rules cause the shape to curve into itself, growing into a complex form of layered undulating lines. The goal is to create a shape that fills as much space as possible while maintaining a rigid form and avoiding overlapping itself. By focusing specifically on where and when you add more nodes, and how you interpret those nodes into a shape, there is much variety to be found in this simple algorithm.

Since I first learned about this technique, and wrote my own version based off these rules, I have been continuing to iterate, evolve, and optimize my code. It's an algorithm I always find myself coming back to, and has become my most researched topic and longest running experiment. I love its use of real life physics, and I find its outputs aesthetically pleasing on a deeper, almost instinctual level. 

Each output of 'Spaghetti Bones' starts with a simple shape as a seed for the differential growth algorithm. Throughout the rendering process, the shape is fed more nodes, and grows until it cannot find any empty space to fill. As it grows, a form is interpreted from the nodes of the growth and drawn onto the screen, creating a snapshot of the growth at that particular moment. There are many rules that govern how the shape grows, and how its form is interpreted, and these rules often evolve throughout the rendering process. When the render is complete, the resulting image is a full catalog of the history of the shape's life. 

The name of this project was created by Nicole, my girlfriend and an art wizard. Early on in the development of this project, I asked her to name an output I was sharing, and she chose to call it ‘Spaghetti Bones’ because that’s what it looked like. Since then, the name has stuck with me. I decided to keep the name for the final project in order to highlight the playfulness of each output, to encourage imagination when viewing this abstract art, and to thank Nicole for being tremendously supportive and helpful throughout my exploration of the art world.

Agar is a generative art project inspired by abstract expressionism, pixel art, and the grid rules studied in graphic design. Color, the essential element of pixel art, gives life to simple shapes and defines a composition. Playing against the rigidity of a pixel grid, Agar exuberantly uses 100 different color palettes—each one appearing exactly once in the 100 outputs.

The series embraces the aesthetics of pixel art while reimagining its formal constraints. Instead of using only squares, Agar introduces circles as another basic shape. The squares and circles are arranged on a regular grid, but they vary in size—within a fixed set of eight dramatically varying scales—to create dynamic compositions.

The title comes from a gelatinous substance, derived from seaweed, that is used to grow bacteria and other microorganisms in petri dishes. It relates to the idea of cellular life forms growing on the matrix of a pixel grid, and the diversity of shapes and colors that can be found in nature. Agar asks: what if squares and circles are the building blocks of digital life? What forms might evolve to live on the screen?

Agar is a celebration of the beauty possible within constraints. Through color, it invites us to imagine new forms of life and art on the digital canvas.

Artifacts mean many things.  

They are the products of humanity and of machine learning. They are also errors of perception and representation. At the end, they are traces of what has been and what might be — evidence of our majesty and fallibility.  

These _artifacts_ are an attempt to imagine a new token economy where both image and coinage can challenge tired histories. By harnessing the emergent potential of generative AI, they unearth the unexpected while hinting at human-machine cultures not yet discovered.  

Through a process of devoted iteration, we have inserted alternative histories into the complex of ancient and medieval money, thereby posing the question: what might images of pregnancy, of family, and of domesticity mean when minted onto currency?  

Our tokens tell simple stories of private lives but the identities of their subjects remain unknown. _artifacts_ exist in a space of contested histories, displacing value from established, patriarchal power and situating it in our homes. In doing so, they ask the collector to join in the creation of new meanings.

Liminal is an artistic exploration that emerges from a period of questioning, when the boundaries between emotions, ideas and perceptions become blurred.
The structures in Liminal act as obstacles, deliberately created to obstruct what's hidden next, while at the same time encouraging the desire to look for guides to overcome them.

The essence of Liminal lies in the composition itself, which alternates between similar and completely different shapes, reflecting the oscillation of thought between structure and dispersion. Each work is a reflection of this state of mind, capturing those moments of variation when emotions mix in a dance of color and form.

In Liminal, colors become the language of emotions, translating this complex spectrum. Each canvas is an expression of a wide range of emotions, from doubt to energy, from serenity to nostalgia and many more.
This allows the spectator to immerse himself in an ocean of feelings. Like emotions, colors have different intensities.

Liminal is what exists at the threshold of our perceptions and understanding. It's a visual journey through the frontiers of the mind, where emotions are transformed into colors and ideas into shapes, inviting everyone to lose themselves in this ambiguity.

"Public Art" is a generative art piece with a concept of exploring new histories in art. As demonstrated in [0xhaiku's previous work, "Receipt,"](https://slbls.art/receipt) the transaction information engraved on receipts suggests that new art finds value in the record of transactions, connecting you to the art. In this work, a color palette inspired by Vermeer, Hokusai and others is used to generate tiles with a generative oil painting-like touch. This symbolizes history, expressing the hope that new art will truly become "public" through the changes and transitions of history.

Tiles
The tiles are simulated based on inspiration from the actual streets of Omotesando in Tokyo. The color palette incorporates colors inspired by the floors in Vermeer's paintings, ukiyo-e, and others. The oil painting-like strokes are generated using generative techniques, giving each tile its unique charm.

2D Canvas
This work is drawn using only a 2D canvas, without the use of libraries. 3D representation is not utilized. Since 0xhaiku's previous work "Receipt," they have been fascinated by the allure of wrinkles and shadows, and "Public Art" serves as a study in creating the illusion of three-dimensionality on flat surfaces using generative noise.

Receipt
The receipt includes information on the Seed generated by ArtBlocksEngine at the time of the transaction, as well as token-specific elements. At the BrightMoment event in Japan, physical receipts with similar information printed on them will be distributed. 0xhaiku values the idea that everyone can participate in new art without relying on authority and has chosen the motif of everyday street receipts.

The theme of this work is fireworks and festivals, which symbolizes summer in Japan.

With fireworks as the central theme, it consists of the water surface reflecting the fireworks, the city lights in the distance, the silhouettes of the torii gates and arch bridge, and the twinkling lanterns. The shady black background expresses the smoky atmosphere.

The drawing algorithm of the work is inspired by traditional woodblock prints and contemporary scratch art. Base layer is drawn with pale watercolor-like gradation. On top of that, the shady black background is drawn. Then, the outline of the fireworks is carved out.

The color of fireworks is based on a chemical reaction called a flame reaction. The color palette of this work is also composed of typical flame reaction colors or their mixtures. Each color palette is inspired by the four seasons in Japan.

Totem is a unique collaboration between Beer van Geer and Studio Poca (Julie de Ruijter), aiming to transform the complexity and beauty of heartbeats into visual art. Utilizing the unique patterns in heartbeat data – specifically the interbeat intervals – they generate unique geometric shapes, creating a bridge between biology and art.

Each piece in the Totem series is born from heartbeat data. Collectors are given the choice to input their own heartbeat through an interactive ritual, or alternatively, a random anonymized heartbeat series from our database will be used. The minting technology behind this series is the ArtBlocks Engine, but instead of using the random hashstring that is normally utilised, the heartrate data is used in the creation process. The data is stored on ipfs and embedded as external asset on the blockchain. 

Every line originates from a basic geometric shape chosen randomly based on the data. Other features such as line thickness and the quantity of lines are also determined randomly by the data. Despite the simplicity of these elements the system offers a wide variety of possible variations.

Heart rate data holds a captivating allure for generative art. It is a unique biological signature, rhythmically charting the ebb and flow of our very existence. By using this data as a raw material for art creation, we infuse a deeply personal, living element into the art-making process, creating pieces that are not only visually appealing but also intimately tied to the life force of an individual.

Totem : Symbols of Change #42

Woodblock printing uses a single wooden carving (aka “the matrix”) to produce multiple prints that each have their own subtle variation in texture and registration—in this way, the matrix is the “true” source of new work.

In Luke’s algorithmic process, a single body of code produces many unique matrices which represent related but distinct perspectives on a single idea. A systems based approach to creation leaves space for things to emerge that the artist had not conceived. In its best form, it also enables the creation of artwork with complete unity of concept, system, and manifestation as they become one and the same.

In Seating Arrangements, Shannon highlights both the matrix and its product, the print. The algorithm generates a digital file that serves as the blueprint. These unique instructions are then executed by a CNC machine to carve out the distinct sections of the chair. The carved wooden slab is inked, simulta- neously creating the print and painting the final chair. Finally these pieces are assembled to create a free standing chair entirely from the matrix—without any hardware. The print becomes a record of an inter- mediate event and the matrix is shared as the final assembled sculptural piece of furniture.

In this series, the generative algorithm does more than ornament the final structure: it is central to the very essence of the chair. The artist defined 220 short, straight segments of wood that can be included or excluded by the algorithm and can intersect with up to 13 other segments. The repeating geometry of the design allows the viewer to see the positive form of the chair in the included segments and the nega- tive form of the chair in the absence of those that are not.

The range of possibilities for this algorithm is 2^220, or 1,684,996,666,696,914,987,166,688,442,938- 726,917,102,321,526,408,785,780,068,975,640,576 unique chairs. The incomprehensible multitude of potential chairs elevates one of Shannon’s core questions in the work: what is a chair? Many of the potential outcomes are not sittable, but does that exclude it from being a chair if it still registers as one visually?

If you were to overlap all of the chairs, there would be no single element that is shared by all. The viewer is denied an understanding of the platonic form of a chair, as there is no one common feature that can be distilled as the essence of chair within this series.

The removed segments insert a new dimension to the relationship between body, consciousness, and object. So much of what we come into contact with on a daily basis is designed to recede in our minds— consider “pain free” UI/UX or an office chair. We constantly interact with engineered systems that do not assert themselves. Their recession can mean forgetting that they exist at all, and forgetting that they are designed for their own purposes outside of our wants and needs.

The unique generative structures and simple materiality of Seating Arrangements mean these chairs do not disappear, but rather insert themselves into your consciousness. You must think of how to sit down, perhaps where to put your arm. This awareness of your body and your relationship to the piece reminds you that it has its own identity.

This quote speaks to the idea of transformation, letting go of old ways of thinking and embracing a new perspective. The Divine Comedy is just an allegory to parallel the similarity of long-form synthetic image generation using neural networks, as an art and image creation evolution.  
  
New AI tools are transforming the creative process for artists, pushing the boundaries of what are possible and inspiring new forms of expression. ‘Algoritmo Divino’ is the first on-chain series by Ganbrood, generated in real-time during the mint. Three hundred thirty-three unique iterations will surprise and guide you through three realms of Inferno, Purgatorio & Paradiso. The rarity, and prompt are encrypted on-chain, giving the collector a unique opportunity to collect the artwork's 'secret ingredient', holding the core 'prompt', which is encrypted and is eternally saved on the blockchain.  
  
In Dante's Divine Comedy, the transformation of souls as they journey through the afterlife is a central theme. The characters' experiences and behaviours lead to their conversion towards greater virtue and understanding or deeper learning and suffering.  
Similarly, long-form synthetic image generation using diffusion neural networks, generates images that progress and evolve. The process involves repeatedly applying a diffusion process to an initial image, resulting in a series of intermediate images gradually evolving towards a final, synthesized image. Each image represents a different stage in the generation process, and the final image depicts the journey's culmination.  
  
Divine Comedy's idea of journey and progression is a powerful metaphor in 'Algoritmo Divino' by Ganbrood, which represent many levels of alteration: working with prompt to image generation to personal growth and development. His own transformation as an artist from photography to synthetic images, accepting the new realm of AI and new tools as a creative process, all reflect in ‘Algoritmo Divino’.  
  
Ganbrood challenges himself with the long-form generation, which contradicts his standard process. The irreversibility of the results leaves little or no control over the output from the black box. Nevertheless, his signature themes of animals and gods are present in every 333 iterations, symbolizing humanity's desire to become godlike.

Each of the 923 unique rooms contains a simulated still life, an arrangement of forms.
