# Debe Neur

Kara Kebile and Debe Neur depicts Torres Strait Islander dancers performing. Adorned with traditional attire and artefacts these dancers perform to songs associated with the Land, Sea and Sky. The winds, tides, seasonal change relating to birds, fish and plants. 



Most songs are symbolic and totemic to different regions and groups. Some songs and dance are also made from the everyday life of an Islander. Songs and dance are a big part of Torres Strait Islanders language and livelihood. 



My work showcases some dancers and artefacts of the Eastern Torres Strait, what we dance about and how we adorn ourselves. Different islands have different songs and dance and artefacts they use when dancing to their storyline.

These pieces play a big part in our ceremonies and initiations:

• Beizam Tirig (shark teeth)

• Warup (drum)



Only certain people can perform with these pieces. There is a process of learning.



The patterns represent the singing. It is different and unique to other ways of singing, it's more of a chant.

# KOKUAM (hi biscus)



Kokuam is one of the decorative wears for woman to wear during performance. Many colours indicate what tribe or island they are from.



The patterns represent the different singing tones. Men sing bumer (low bass) and women sing high, all in harmony.

Is a fusion of the 2 worlds I live in - my culture and the culture of hip hop and graffiti.

Kanga Walla Fox referring to a joke my father would say growing up and something that I say now to my children, when pointing out kangaroos and when trying to explain their totem-animal, the red footed paddy melon.

KWF features some unique special rarity features that pay respect to culture, community and family and things that I hold very close to my heart.

Within the background is my graffiti letters SPUD in a flowing style. This is to pay respects to the flowing waters of the hunter river where I grew up - a place I love to still visit today, to clear my head and re connect to Mother Earth.
