In No Feeling is Final, I confront collective and personal loss in the face of a global pandemic through a series of handmade, cameraless photograms. This work began as an experiment in how to make photographic art while at home with two small children during the early months of the pandemic. It grew into a 44ft installation at SFMOMA in the 2021 exhibition “Close to Home” curated by Corey Keller. Now, it has evolved into my first NFT collection. Each photogram was created by saturating rag paper with fugitive inks, then exposing it to direct sunlight for weeks on the roof of my San Francisco apartment. With these unlikely materials, I document the passage of time during a shared experience of loss.

Handkerchiefs are artifacts of personal health and hygiene. They are intimate objects that someone carried and used to absorb their body’s fluids - snot, sweat and tears. In another era, offering your handkerchief was a way of expressing compassion for someone else’s suffering. As the pandemic stretched on, and its impact grew, I began to see these vibrant imprints as representing the growing crowd of those we had lost. In contrast, the handkerchiefs become ever more imperfect and corporeal – worn, dyed black to block the sun, and then faded by exposure to it. The handkerchiefs are my negatives, both the source of the images and the remains of the process – shadow skins of the portraits they made.

By their very nature, loss and change are embedded in these original artworks. Exposure to light will eventually cause the fugitive inks to fade and disappear. Transforming them into an NFT collection and scattering them widely is intended as an act of communal preservation. This collection lives at the intersection of analog photography's impermanence and NFTs immateriality -- two mediums, both initially disregarded by the larger art world, and each with a uniquely troubled relationship to what we view as “real.” By trusting a virtual artwork to outlive its physical counterpart, I point to our own temporality and the chasm we inhabit between the physical and virtual worlds.

The series title comes from a 1905 Rainer Maria Rilke poem entitled “Go to the limits of your longing”

Themes and Variations by Vera Molnár, in collaboration with Martin Grasser

The illustrious computer art pioneer releases her first and only on-chain generative art project investigating three notorious letter forms that changed the conversation around digital art forever. Themes and Variations is Vera Molnár’s personal reflection towards her decades-long practice with the 'machine imaginaire' in the midst of an unforeseen digital art boom brought forward through the introduction of NFTs.

Themes and Variations encompasses a collection of 500 unique generative artworks. Within these works, Molnár passionately explores ideas she has delved into since the late 1960s when she first embarked upon the realm of algorithmic art. Central to her artistic expression is the seamless integration of letters as pure abstract forms, coupled with her affinity for embracing disorder. This deliberate choice grants the machine a certain level of autonomy, allowing it to challenge and even contradict the predefined rules established by Molnár herself. Thus, through this exploration of a dynamic interplay between the artist and the machine, uncharted territories within her creative practice are unveiled.

"All these variations around letters resonate in me like music. Even though I stopped playing the piano at the age of 15, music has never left me. I immediately think of Goldberg Variations or Beethoven's Diabelli Variations on a Waltz. That's why I gave the title Theme and Variations to the latest project with the letters N, F, and T that I am working on for my first and only long form generative art project."

The opposite of a deepfake, this mode of generative AI reaches into the latent space to find the deepreal. Each image branches from a moment in Woodbridge's life, articulating ephemeral threads and potential ways of being. Developed from the concept that 'a look is a meme,' each of these fashion statements says, 'This person is possible.'

This portrait is an excerpt from the photographic archives of beloved photographer Slate Vernick. From 2082-2084, Slate photographed the residents of Canaryville, a coastal community known to outsiders as "Clown Town." For almost two decades, the citizens of Canaryville had widely embraced the practice of dressing up as clowns each day. What started as a unifying form of anti-war protest became a nearly religious cultural tradition and aspect of town identity. The devoted continuation of the practice had long puzzled—and frightened—visitors who would stop for lunch or ice cream before setting their back to "Clown Town" forever.

Built largely in the 1950s-1960s as an affordable tourist resort town not far from the coast, the town fell into disrepair in the late 1980s. In 2059, some 65% of the dilapidated town was then purchased by an internet fast fashion company, whose oversea operations had been bombed in the events leading up to the war. They hastily repurposed several warehouse buildings into textile and clothing factories, making Canaryville an unlikely company town. As war fully broke out, the factory slashed operations to a fraction of the usual volume, leaving thousands unemployed and contributing to the wartime frustration. It was around this time that the first instances of clowns were recorded.

Commissioned by the Esterland Times, Slate Vernick set out to better understand the residents of Canaryville and their obsession with dressing up as clowns. Was it an elaborate technique to encourage tourism in a timid, post-war world? A way to cope with the loss of family members and friends? A form of protest? By immersing himself in the community, members of the town opened up to him. For nearly two years, he photographed and conducted interviews with citizens, seeking to understand with a tape recorder in one hand and a medium format film camera in the other. He felt the analog approach to the work would portray the story in a more authentic way, not shying away from the difficult symptoms of residual radioactivity—feathery, multiple fingers, mishappen facial features, and the like.

Some met his curiosity with cheerful vulnerability, and others with puzzlement. Most averted their gaze with melancholy in their eyes. By the end of his time in Clown Town, he was respected, but still not necessarily befriended. The Esterland Times never published the work, afraid they might frighten their readers and over-humanize the residents of a town that was so often the brunt of political jokes.

While his tape recordings have been long lost, Slate Vernick's film archives have been rediscovered and published here in an attempt to preserve his thoughtful, unsettling, intimate, and beautiful body of work on the puzzling place known as "Clown Town."
