For some, a safe space could mean spending time with family, or a daily ritual or going to the gym. So what is it about these spaces that make us feel safe? Is it the things that fill it? The feeling it brings? What makes it YOUR safe space? It's probably difficult to answer these questions because safe spaces are so deeply personal. You chose it to be your place of comfort, a place that’s judgment free. Safe spaces don’t coddle us or blind us from the realities of our world. They offer us a brief opportunity to be vulnerable and let down our guard without fear of judgment or harm. This piece of art was made in collaboration with the community’s responses to what their dream indoor safe space looks like. Our safe spaces are defined by our emotions and experiences. They don’t need to be pretty, popular, or perfect. They just need to be ours!

True freedom comes from accepting and loving yourself at whatever stage you are in life, but often there are societal structures and standards that make doing that incredibly hard. This piece symbolizes the fight against those oppressive structures and pressures in an effort to find that freedom in choosing yourself. The contrast between the figures movement and the rigidity of the lines around her are an attempt to highlight that battle. And as the resistance begins, that stringency slowly begins to fall apart. Allowing her to begin her dance, to begin her journey to freedom. Because in a society like ours, going against the grain and choosing yourself is very often a revolutionary act in and of itself. So here's to breaking free.
