Spectators watch as a 'sen' class rocket punches skyward at the 'Bun Bang Fai' (merit fireball) rocket festival in Yasothon, Thailand. The ceremonial use of rockets at the start of the rainy season has been taking place in Laos and Thailand for centuries. Drawing inspiration from local mythology the ritual today is a deeply cultural and highly festive community event. Yasothon hosts the most well-known modern 'Bun Bang Fai', annually attracting thousands of visitors to the province. Each team takes great pride in their creation, blessing each rocket with a prayer before sending them to the heavens in the hope they will be rewarded with rain. I photographed the Yasothon festival twice, first in 2017, it is an incredible example of human ingenuity bringing a time-honored tradition to life.

On August 18th, 2019 an estimated 1.7 million people took to the streets of Hong Kong in one of the largest protests in the city’s history, centering on Hong Kong Island’s Victoria Park. A heavy rain began to fall as every square meter of available space was filled with an unstoppable mass of humanity. Nearly every attendee carried an umbrella which had been a symbol of the pro-democracy movement since the 2014 Yellow Umbrella Revolution, creating a vibrant geometric patchwork when viewed from above. Organized by the Civil Human Rights Front group, the gathering was permitted within the park grounds itself, though quickly spilled out to the streets of Hong Kong Island. Authorities were left with no option but to allow the rally to carry on, culminating in a march of hundreds of thousands of protesters across the normally busy streets of the global financial center. The day’s events were seen as a revitalizing moment, catalyzing the months long protest movement to continue.
