ARTIFICIAL DREAMS: BRENDAN NORTH

Celebrating 2 years in web3, I put my heart and my soul into my photography work each day and continually show up in the hope of bettering myself.  This is a symbol of my love for deep-sky astrophotography. 

This is a 4 panel mosaic captured from my garden in Scotland with a telescope and dedicated astronomy camera.  With a total integration time of 15 hours, each panel was calibrated, stacked and stitched together to create a RAW image and then processed in PixInsight and finished off in Photoshop. 

The Heart Nebula is an emission nebula 7500 light years from Earth.  It is located in the constellation of Cassiopeia.  It was discovered by William Herschel on the 3rd of November 1787.  It displays glowing ionized hydrogen gas and darker dust lanes.  

The nebula's intense red output and its morphology are driven by the radiation emanating from a small group of stars near the nebula's center.  This open cluster of stars contains a few bright stars nearly 50 times the mass of the Sun.  The shape of the nebula is driven by stellar winds from the hot stars in its core.

The Soul Nebula is also an emission nebula located in the constellation of Cassiopeia.

Foundation

During the first lockdowns in Scotland back in 2020, I took my telescope out into the front garden to capture the moon during the day time. There's just something sci-fi about seeing it during the day. It gave me something to focus on, something to look forward to and it kept the mind busy.

This was captured using my Fuji XT-2 attached to a Sky-watcher 72 ed telescope at 400mm.

The stacking was done in Adobe Photoshop.

Halfway There

This is my 3rd 2-panel mosaic that I've created since the dark nights returned back in September. With a total integration time of 17 hours of this large nebula. 

I love the colour palette I used to create my Rosette Nebula so I've been adopting it for some of my other narrowband targets this year. This is a false SHO colour palette using a dual band narrowband filter with a colour astronomy camera. 

I just love all the different structures found in and around this nebula. This is a first time for me capturing this target.

The Elephant's Trunk Nebula is a dense pocket of gas and dust in IC 1396, an emission nebula found in the constellation Cepheus.  It is a large and comparatively faint emission nebula and star forming region over 100 light years across and is 2,400 light years from earth.  The Elephant's Trunk Nebula is over 20 lightyears long and can be found running through IC 1396.  This can be found in the bottom left of the image.

Elephant's Trunk Nebula

This is my 5th 2 panel mosaic in the collection and for #5 I chose the stunning Heart Nebula.

With a total integration time of around 15 hours I really wanted to capture the beauty of the shape and structures that make up the nebula.  I normally significantly reduced the stars in my work, but I loved the vast number of colourful stars so I kept more of them in. 

This was calibrated, stacked, stitched and processed in PixInsight.  The nebula and stars were then added together in Photoshop and minor edits were made.

Heart Nebula

This is my 4th 2-panel mosaic I've captured since the dark nights returned in September here in Scotland.  I really wanted to challenge myself this time round and mosaics seemed a good place to start!

This is a total of 15.5 hours of integration time over the 2 panels.  I captured this using a telescope and camera on top of an equatorial mount to capture the data from my back garden. 

I then calibrated, stacked, stitched and processed it in PixInsight with my desired false SHO colour palette that I've started to use for some of my narrowband work.  I then added the stars to the nebula image separately in Photoshop.

The California Nebula also known as NGC 1499 is an emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus.  Its name comes from its resemblance to the outline of the US State of California.  It lies at a distance of about 1,000 light years from Earth.  The California Nebula was discovered by E. E. Barnard in 1884.

California Nebula

This confrontation occurs in Chapter 23 of DRIFTER, titled, "Brother Fire." An excerpt from that chapter is here depicted as an animated scene, exclusively for Avatar Holders.


Rahu nodded as if he understood every word only too well. “So you see now why you have to die?”  
	“I won’t,” I said calmly. “Not for you.”  
	Elias drew close to my side. I knew that if Rahu made one false move he would have a dragon, a changer, and a Star Kin to contend with. I had never been able to articulate the way I felt, to confront the shadow that followed me. I hoped the truth would help us both.  
	“I want to eat your life,” Rahu said guiltily.  
	“You think that will fix things?”  
	He frowned as if troubled by a memory, as if recalling the centuries of his life and finding them lacking. “I’ve seen everything and done everything,” he said. “Everything I ever wanted. And yet . . . nothing. I used to be a titan. Now I am all in ruins.”  
	I thought of the little boy I had seen walking beside me in the Fade, the fragment of Rahu’s past. Who was he, really? That little boy had died centuries ago. He wouldn’t remember. Then he surprised me.  
	“Oh yes,” he said, his eyes remote. “I remember being alive. To have it over again, I’d give anything.”  
	Elias stood tall and silent beside me, his fists white knots, his eyes searching. I knew that he did not want to fight. He was a man of compassion, a healer at heart. He was trying to understand Rahu. But he said nothing, leaving the talking to me.  
	I watched Rahu for a long moment. His eyes were as dark as the windows of an empty house. “You’re connected to me,” I said. “You share my thread of empathy. I feel your desolation. The link is making us miserable. Give me time to try and understand it, so I can undo it.”  
	“There is no time,” Rahu said. “My mistress is not finished with Alta. She is coming. She knows about you, about the hold you have on me. She will break you into atoms.”  
	“Why do you serve her when you could be free?”  
	Rahu merely shrugged, summing up his entire life with a gesture. Suddenly I knew what he was. A man after all, but a man who had stared at the dark for too long.  
	Apparently finished with me, Rahu turned away. He waved his hand and parted the world as if drawing aside a curtain. I saw for an instant the Sunless Vale, the tendrils of the aurora burning down the sky between skies. Then his shadow folded over him, distorting his features, and he was gone.

This liquid landscape was captured off the coast of Australia's South West at a surf break simply known as The Right.  Home to some of the heaviest waves on the planet, it only fires up a handful of times each year when the conditions perfectly align. This was one of those days - the ocean displaying its raw force, a powerful moment in time that will never occur again.

Chequiggle emerges as a harmonious blend of the classic and the new, a fusion of the established and the emerging. Squiggles, a revered foundation in the realm of generative art, and Checks, a rising star in the world of conceptual and memetic art, came together to create something truly unique and captivating.

Eternally looping, Chequiggle will continue to move forward, transcending time and space.

My goal was to pay homage to these titans of the digital art world while leaving my own unique imprint. 

This is 3.5 hours of star trails revolving around the Southern Celestial Pole (SCP) over Mt Ruapehu - the North Island of New Zealand’s highest peak and only active land-based volcano.

What are star trails I hear you say? They are the movement of stars over time and are captured by setting up a motion-free timelapse that captures the stars revolving around the SCP - an imaginary point in the sky that the stars appear to revolve around. Fun Fact: it is actually the earth that turns that creates the movement!

This is the first and only image of its' kind ever captured from this location and one that has been on my bucket-list for years. To finally have the winter alpine skills and confidence to attempt such a shot in a location like this, has been years in the making. It's one thing to just turn up and shoot somewhere in cold weather, but to camp out for several days in such an extreme environment has so much more involved and the risks are just that much greater.

Capturing this image took a lot of preparation and planning in order to first survive and then to capture all the images I needed under such brutal winter conditions. At 2620m / 8600ft and in -25ºc / -13ºf temperatures, the air literally takes your breath away, freezes any exposed skin as well as sucking the life from your camera equipment real quick! It is to date, the coldest and most desolate location I have ever photographed in.

This star trail is made up from 328 individual images of the sky and then stacked together and then finally blended with a single long exposure image for the foreground and to be honest, I was really surprised my camera lasted that long due to the insane cold!

There is nothing that can describe the feeling of being alone and standing on top of this incredible mountain while witnessing the beauty of the heavens above you. The feeling of capturing images that have never been seen before from locations such as this, motivates me to push myself and my gear to the absolute limit of endurance.

Star trails have become a bit of an obsession over recent years and take hours of capturing and editing to get the result you see before you. I pride myself on creating some of the cleanest trails on the planet from locations that have never been seen before.

This trip changed EVERYTHING for me and unbeknown to me at the time, would start my photographic adventures into cold desolate places where others fear to tread. 

This image will always be a milestone and a reminder of what is possible with the right preparation, dedication and setting big goals in the pursuit of the art of astro.

Iceland’s Seljalandsfoss is one of the most popular, and impressive, waterfalls in Iceland. Famous for the views from behind the falling water, to me Seljalandsfoss looks amazing from the front as well in winter, when the cliffs are frozen, and the foreground all covered in snow.

Photographing it in the middle of winter is hard; the ever-present wind blows spray water from the waterfall that instantly freezes on your lens and filters, making it nearly impossible to get a clean shot.

Compositionally, this image is based upon dynamic diagonals and curves, for a sense of peace enhanced by the frozen landscape.

The waterfalls facing Buachaille Etive Mor are one of the most popular sights in Glencoe, Scotland. I visited these falls dozens of times, looking for the perfect conditions with the river full, the rapids roaring and the sky cloudy and windy.

The image I had in mind was very different from your usual view of this scene; I wanted to give a sense of how wild, powerful and massive the waterfalls can be, and how crazy the wind could make the clouds look.

Compositionally, I wanted the wind to blow the clouds so that they’d point down towards the mountain, to counterbalance the movement of the falling water.

During the new born season there is a lot of cuddling between mothers and their calfs in the field, it is always a joy to witness those precious moments. On a moody evening this mother and calf where all alone in the field which I thought was a little bit strange, because normally there is a group of at least 20 Teddycows out there. But when I came close I saw why: this calf was just born and the mother was busy licking the fur of the calf. This specific moment was like mother kissing the little mocca coloured calf, I was happy to capture it. After a few photos I decided to respect their privacy and leave them alone.

Scottish Isle of Lunga is one of the northern islands where puffins come to breed. I spent several days with them - I do love birds and enjoy making their photos. However, puffins really stand out - first impression was that they are like cats in bird world. Curios and mischievous.

Chapter 2

Isolation Phases piece is  6 phases of the Moon captured on different nights and blended together in this image

before the COVID-19 quarantines, I went for photography and stargazing every weekend, I enjoyed the night sky & stars for a few hours every week. But with quarantines things changed, I couldn't do anything

I couldn't travel and after a few months, it had a bad effect on me, But one day as I was standing on the balcony and looking at the city lights, I saw the moon rising on the horizon, I picked up my camera and telephoto lens and started taking pictures of the Moon,

the idea of taking images of the full cycle of the moon came to my mind, I was in quarantine and isolation, and this was the only thing that was left for me from astronomy during the COVID-19 time,

Because of the bad weather and pollution, It took me eight-month to completely photograph the Moon at each phase, a total of 4767 raw images and 230 Gb of Data for this project.

Title: Lonely Temple (Glow Edition)

Story:

There are something very special about finding hidden gems local to your area, this is one of them. This temple was not marked on the google map, I purely came across it by chance when I was walking in the area. 

Getting there wasn't that straight forward as I had to walked through some forest as well as a field full of cows and bulls, not to mention it was during night time as well. I chose a night when the night was calm and the sky was clear, so patience was needed here. Unfortunately, the location wasn't too far away from urban civilisations, so there were some light pollution nearby, which meant that I wasn't able to capture the milky way within the photo. 

However, the negative space in the sky alongside with the lone standing temple in the middle of forest create a sense of minimalism within the photo when it comes to framing it. Then, the drone was used to bring the temple to life by light painting around the temple.

This NFT is made up of 10 hours of Integration time captured from my garden with a telescope and dedicated astronomy camera.

This is an updated version of the Andromeda Galaxy to go a long with the release of my Editions under my own smart contract.
