The Spring Equinox, where we welcome new life and light, a perfect balance of day and night into our skies, and a time to enjoy the coming of warmer months and new colour to our world.

Spring is one of my favourite seasons for photography. Flowers are in bloom and transform some of the most barren landscapes into beautiful waves of colour. The evenings slowly start to grow with more opportunities to photograph in the daylight, and the last remnants of snow are starting to melt away into the landscape.

Every year in New Zealand the Russell Lupins bloom during the months of November to December, Spring Time in the Southern Hemisphere. Where the majority grow in the South Island, these floral wonders transform what is usually a colourless landscape of wild tussocks and rocky outcrops into the most stunning scenes of reds, pinks, purples and yellows.

With Aoraki Mount Cook, Lake Pukaki and Russell Lupins in frame, this image is quintessential Spring Equinox in New Zealand.

Spring Equinox

A time to take advantage of the light of the sun and it reaching the highest point in the sky and its longevity through the days.

The Summer solstice represents the transition from action to nourishment, which is exactly what the Sun gives us during the long nights of our warmest season, allowing us to continue our journey from darkness to light. 

As a landscape photographer summer brings me the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets, exploring the warm currents of the ocean and taking my camera underwater. 

I took this single shot image of my best friend as we were diving in the summer months at the Poor Knights Islands in New Zealand. Curious Blue Mao Mao fish surrounded her as I watched from outside the cave.

This image was selected as Editors Top Pick by National Geographic and is displayed on their website. A career highlight for sure.

Summer Solstice

Suspended in a sea of blue, the ephemeral moon glows faintly.  
 
Walking along the coast I felt an air of disappointment, the light was quickly fading and the sky was covered with a blanket of clouds. A blue tint washed over the scene as dusk and night began to fall, it was just me and the ethereal sound of waves crashing against the sand. Shortly after the clouds opened to reveal an illuminated waxing crescent moon, reminding me of the beauty of unexpected moments.

‘Gravitational Pull’ is part of the triptych edition ‘Synchronicity’. Weaving three different experiences from the sea, sky and mountains that evoke a similar feeling of inner stillness.

Lost in the depths of blue, the echoes of silence confront my consciousness and call to me. 

The question of where my path is going stirs through my mind, but the answer remains in a continuous state of flux. These memories act as anchors, keeping me grounded when life feels like it's getting further away. I return to them to remind myself of the solace that can be found in unexpected moments, soon woven together through their meaningful synchronicities. 

It's with hope that this visual narrative helps to evoke a sense of assurance and calmness, wherever your story or path leads you.

It is impossible to be in a bad mood when watching puffins.  With their colorful beaks and bright orange feet, they are nature’s antidepressant.  Time to share the joy!

I am Blue Jay Way, and I connect with the beauty of nature and wildlife through photography.  My photos often raise awareness of conservation efforts and the impact of our personal choices.  

Fun facts: Puffins live for about 20 years, mate for life, and share the burden of raising their chicks, called “pufflings”.  
Pufflings incubate in burrows for about 40 days, have about 40 days in the nest with their parents, and then spend the next 2-3 years at sea before returning to the same place to mate.  

Puffins are sensitive to human choices, and populations in some places have declined due to overfishing and climate change.  Puffins remind us of how connected we are to the natural world and how many beautiful creatures either benefit or suffer from the choices we make.

The Puffin Portrait 1/15 edition celebrates the beauty and resilience of puffins.  The photo was taken on the Isle of May, Scotland, which is home to over 200,000 nesting seabirds in the spring.  When the edition sells out, I will adopt a puffin through the National Audubon Society.

Cloak 44 is a collection by Dominique Baker made up of 44x 1/1 NFTs created from one large woodblock relief print IRL. The physical print (measuring 2.4m x 1.2m) was first carved in to mdf wood using Yoshiharu steel chisels. The carving alone took about 40 hours to complete. The finished carving was then rolled over with black waterbased ink. Fabric made of 100% cotton was then laid on top of the ink, and with the help of Baker's husband Hamish Wight it was driven over by a heavy 2.5 tonne roadwork steel roller.

Each NFT is a close-up of the final relief print, creating a beautiful high resolution image, perfect for printing or as a large backdrop in the Metaverse.

Four NFTs from the collection have been kept as artist copies for print distribution.

How about the Wanaka Tree in black & white? I've not often seen shots of the tree in black & white, usually (as you can see from my other shots) because the colours you can get here for both sunrise and sunset are usually rather nice!



Rangitoto is the main focal point in the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland. It's our main volcano, last erupting around 600 years ago. It's one of around 50 volcanos dotted around Auckland.

Tomorrow is Mother's day.

Every year this time feels a bit weird to me. People who see my posts on socials may imagine my life is a dream. What most of them don't know is that I'm not the type of person to share personal issues. It's been almost a year since I've been welcomed in this space, so it is time to get to know each other a little better.

Family is something you can see in a lot of my work. There are reasons for that.

I grew up in a broken family. My father wasn't in the picture for the first 12 years, and my mother struggled with mental health issues and addictions. She was violent and so was the stepfather I had later on.

Violence occurred daily, for years. As a child, I was unable to defend myself. I grew up full of guilt because when one is too young to understand adult violence, they tend to think it is all their fault, that somehow they deserve it. It took me years to understand that I did nothing wrong.

I left home at 17, without a penny and my head full of demons. I became a user for a long time, while playing in a punk rock band. Few years down the road, I managed to stop drinking and get away from the drugs. Since then, I’ve built a career taking care of people and animals through my work.

I often say the ocean saved my life. I really mean it, as it was my only getaway from all of this. It was (and still is) my wonderland, a place where I could stop thinking for a few hours and escape

My mother died from alcoholism ten years ago. We hadn’t spoken since I left home.

l don’t know how I feel about it.

While most people would see this image as a representation of a mother’s love, to me it shows a child choosing to reach for the light, as his mother choose to follow a darker path.

In the middle of a life changing 45 day cross country Canada photography road trip in ’21, I found myself in the heart of the Rockies witnessing this incredible scene as the first light dimmed amongst the calm waters and summer wildflowers. Looking back on the experience almost a year later, this was a top highlight. A morning in these mountains can change your soul, and make you realize dreams do become a reality. Thank you for looking at my work! Keep on keeping on.
