The first thing you see is a face. Two eyes, a nose, a mouth stretched in an impossibly wide smile, showing off rows of cracked, crumbling teeth. Next you notice the skin: an acid-colored swirling pattern that looks like it would have the consistency of liquid latex, if you could only reach through the screen and touch it. In some of these pieces, whimsically demonic creatures perch in the face's mouth and eye sockets.

The faces are gruesome, playful, and trippy. They're vaguely reminiscent of Lewis Carroll's Cheshire Cat-which is appropriate considering that this is a generative collection influenced by psychedelics called Psychonautz NFT.

Psychonautz NFT consists of 9,999 unique works hand drawn by the artist Sander Jansen and is personally curated by Gabriel Santos. The collection features four different characters that were named by the GBLSTS team and Psychonautz community.

I made the Obey TV Advertisement print in 1996, inspired by a few things. I was a fan of Barbara Kruger's economical but potent combinations of image and text typified by a red bar with bold Futura text in white. I also was fascinated by Marshall McLuhan's concept of "the medium is the message," which suggests that the ways forms of media are digested lend to a style and formula of messaging for success to such an extent that the message mutates to best adapt to the style and medium of delivery. Television is a great example since it is received passively and laden with catchy soundbites and snappy clips meant to be fast, easy, and pleasing to digest. Ads are nothing more than a device woven into the entertainment rhythm with a sales agenda. I made a skateboard film in 1995 called A.D.D. Attention Deficiency Disorder (I shortly after realized the actual clinical term is Attention Deficit Disorder… oh well) which focused on skateboarding and the idea that the overwhelming inundation of media was making us a bit more anxious and shortening our attention spans. I enjoyed the irony of commenting on media over-saturation while also contributing to media over-saturation. Things have only become more intense in the age of social media. I'm a big fan of using a plethora of media to spread art and ideas, but I think carefully about the pros and cons of various media forms and how they can influence content. I want to empower myself and others with digital tools while avoiding the race-to-the-bottom approach. We all benefit as consumers and creators from an awareness of the inherent characteristics of different forms of media. In 1996 I was just beginning to think in a deeper way about some of these concepts.

The Obey AK-47 diptych was created in 1998 when I was first learning how to use Illustrator on a Mac. I scanned the gun and did the rest of the design in Illustrator. I was in my phase of emulating the style of Russian Constructivist propaganda art which was very powerful aesthetically and economical to produce because of the minimal color palette. I also was amused that because of the Cold War, Americans were conditioned to fear anything with a Soviet association. After studying Phenomenology, one of my premises was that people judge things superficially, so it is easy to provoke them with art that looks sinister even though it is benevolent. Conversely, I was concerned that people are too easily seduced by things that have a superficial appeal, but are actually peddling something sinister. I’m pro-peace, but I knew the inclusion of rows of AK-47 rifles would be ominous to viewers and make them ask questions. To save money I used one piece of film and Rubylith to make this diptych. I simply flipped the film and cut the GIANT and 7’4”520LB out so the OBEY text reversed symmetrically, but the GIANT and 7’4”520LB still read correctly. The two sides were printed one at a time. I didn’t sell many sets of these prints because my friend John Goff opened a record store called The Way Out Sound in San Diego, where I was living, and asked me to do a poster installation on the walls of the store. I used about 40 sets of the AK-47 diptych in the store and it closed after less than a year. Oh well!
