ICONS deals with self creation. We are all costumed characters whether we realize it or not. Beyond the genetic hands we’re dealt, we forge our personas through occupation, clothing and hairstyle choices, our possessions, and how we communicate through body language and expressions. Too often, people believe that they are locked into social roles and play their parts such as that of a doting mother, a respected priest, a right-wing conservative, or an anti-establishment iconoclast. In casting themselves as singular identities, they forget the fullness of who they are. ICONS invites you to approach identity with a sense of play and malleability, and to recognize the forgotten parts of yourself as you see them reflected in these portraits.

“Kedisan” is the first of three pieces of my genesis series, “Serendipity”. 

East Bali is famed for its wild volcanic landscapes, lush vegetation, and quaint villages barely touched by modernity. It’s also a place I’ve become incredibly familiar with over the past two years, with kind-hearted and curious faces greeting me at every turn.

The global pandemic had a severe impact on Bali’s tourism sector, and led to the vast majority of hospitality workers with little choice but to return to more labour-intensive work in their home villages across the island. For myself, it meant an abrupt halt to my work schedule and an incredibly challenging period of personal growth.

I became intrigued by the simplistic beauty of the patterns found in traditional lines of agricultural work, and, influenced by my obsession with RPG games for many years prior, I caught myself progressively engrossed in capturing the wonderful people and places I stumbled upon.

It’s the serendipitous moments like this, combined with my deep-rooted love for photography and the outdoors, that ultimately became my therapy.

Little compares to the stillness found in those moments spent in solitude, watching the vividly complex and untold lives of strangers unfold before you as the rest of the world passes by. 

With a boat full of fresh seaweed, I caught this farmer slowly drifting back to shore where he began sorting and drying his harvest under the morning sun’s watchful eye.

Wide angle lens and main one, I was sad and devastated

So, I looked for the help in ICELAND and I tweeted about this incident and within a seconds people came into DMs and RT/QT and whole community stood for me to help me in that remote land.So this broken hope got the new hope from the community and people who not just helped me but encouraged me to move on and live the rest of the trip and don’t affect your mental health or photography due to this..

The in-camera installations in this series of photographs are inspired by locust swarms, starling murmurations and other self-organizing systems found in nature. Made from manufactured items like cups, plates and post-it notes, each installation is an experiment in juxtaposition, an attempt to create something that is simultaneously in harmony and in conflict with its environment. The final photographs, shot on 4x5 film and reproduced with little to no digital manipulation, press the viewer not only to contemplate our dysfunctional relationship with nature, but also to envision a future in which natural and human-made systems are integrated and sustainably intertwined.

Bushes & Succulents is Mona Kuhn’s celebration of the female essence - confident, raw and elegant, yet confrontational and unapologetic. She returned to the darkroom for the very first reason she fell in love with photography: the latent image. Inspired by the 1920s photo-surrealists, Kuhn explores the ethereal quality of solarization, a darkroom process that unites photography with sketching, in which the subject seems drawn by the alchemist's pencil, resulting in prints with layers of oxidized silver glow in the form of crystalized magic. 

Reminiscent of Georgia O’Keefe’s floral paintings, your eyes wander around the graceful lines, not knowing exactly what you are looking at.  The solarisation process reveals human imperfections, not only in the metallic brilliance of the skin, but also brings to the surface a woman’s struggles, strengths, and power.

“The frame reminded me of early childhood, at age eight or so, when I would jump in the shower with my mother. It resonates an adoration and child-like curiosity for what it is to be a woman. My intention is not to objectify the body, but to celebrate the female body and its essence.

It was crucial for me to collaborate with women of various ages, ethnic backgrounds and body shapes. I wanted to embrace their beauty, their gracious moves, as well as their skin marks and signs of life. My intention is to bring them all together, to unify, just like Gwendolyn Brook's poem, which emphasizes the word "we". For centuries, the art world was seen through the eyes of a small few who, under a patriarchal society, chose the aesthetic and the narrative—and whose main depiction of the sacred female body was as an objectified and sexualized woman. 

Delphine Diallo aims to change this dynamic. Her intention is for every woman she photographs to feel the image she makes of them is a personal gift. “I am not taking pictures, I am giving pictures,” as Diallo puts it. By engaging in intimate conversations with her subjects, Delphine removes the sense of vulnerability that often comes with being photographed. Working with body painters and jewelry and mask makers, Diallo also uses traditional mythology and spiritual symbols to empower her subjects. Her portraiture is all about connection and exchange. She believes women are deep beings and connects with them on an emotional level. The French-Senegalese photographer spends more time speaking with her subjects than photographing them. 

Diallo’s photographs are never discriminating, yet deeply communicative, and portray women beyond judgment, soaking up their limitless beauty. Diallo's works are meant to encourage every woman to write a personal narrative, to take a stand, to have a firm voice. No preparatory models, sketches, or plans lay behind her photographs, which depict only outstanding feminine painted bodies. It is all a part of the vision flowing out of the artist's mind, grounded in her right brain hemisphere, predominant in her energetic and vibrant personality. 

Drawing elements from eastern mythology and philosophy, whilst always ennobling and empowering women, her practice is reminiscent of Oriental 19th-century painting. Looking at Krishnamurti, Frantz Fanon, Joseph Campbell, Bruce Lee, Aimé Césaire, and A.D. Wilson as deep inspirational sources, her photographs raise awareness, appealing to all women to awaken their senses. Diallo immerses herself in the realm of the feminine universe and her eloquent portraiture technique unveils and stirs unexplored emotion and insight meant to reach beyond appearances.

In No Feeling is Final, I confront collective and personal loss in the face of a global pandemic through a series of handmade, cameraless photograms. This work began as an experiment in how to make photographic art while at home with two small children during the early months of the pandemic. It grew into a 44ft installation at SFMOMA in the 2021 exhibition “Close to Home” curated by Corey Keller. Now, it has evolved into my first NFT collection. Each photogram was created by saturating rag paper with fugitive inks, then exposing it to direct sunlight for weeks on the roof of my San Francisco apartment. With these unlikely materials, I document the passage of time during a shared experience of loss.

Handkerchiefs are artifacts of personal health and hygiene. They are intimate objects that someone carried and used to absorb their body’s fluids - snot, sweat and tears. In another era, offering your handkerchief was a way of expressing compassion for someone else’s suffering. As the pandemic stretched on, and its impact grew, I began to see these vibrant imprints as representing the growing crowd of those we had lost. In contrast, the handkerchiefs become ever more imperfect and corporeal – worn, dyed black to block the sun, and then faded by exposure to it. The handkerchiefs are my negatives, both the source of the images and the remains of the process – shadow skins of the portraits they made.

By their very nature, loss and change are embedded in these original artworks. Exposure to light will eventually cause the fugitive inks to fade and disappear. Transforming them into an NFT collection and scattering them widely is intended as an act of communal preservation. This collection lives at the intersection of analog photography's impermanence and NFTs immateriality -- two mediums, both initially disregarded by the larger art world, and each with a uniquely troubled relationship to what we view as “real.” By trusting a virtual artwork to outlive its physical counterpart, I point to our own temporality and the chasm we inhabit between the physical and virtual worlds.

The series title comes from a 1905 Rainer Maria Rilke poem entitled “Go to the limits of your longing”
Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.

These images are a reinterpretation of Guadalupe’s symbolism which, for me, transcends their religious origin. Instead, this series is intended to honor the divine feminine energy, sacredness, and healing that Guadalupe's imagery can encapsulate for people of all genders and backgrounds. 

These photos explore topics such as womanhood, masculinity, and piety and ask, what does it mean to be divine? The project includes portraits of family and friends who share my affinity with Guadalupe, as well as images of apparitions found in various public places. I also created images that reimage Guadalupe in a contemporary context. Each is distinct, but serves one purpose - to connect people.
