You’ve emerged on the other side into the light, exultant. Now what will you do with your new enlightenment? Who will you choose to become?

I photographed this self portrait at the end of a month long solo road trip through Southern California. I waited for a weather window I thought would make for good golden light right before sunset, which happened to be the evening after NFT LA, where I had spent a week with like minded blockchain artists, collectors and developers, all connecting about building the future together. I was on a high from the excitement and energy of the past week, ready to go out and create the final image for this collection. 

I had planned for months exactly where the last photo would be taken: a mysterious castle turret built into the seaside cliffs, seemingly emerging out of nowhere. It was a location I had been wanting to photograph for years and - with a nod to the castles included in my previous two NFT collections - I knew it was the perfect place for creating the conclusion of this new fairytale I was creating.

However, LA traffic had different plans, and as I sat on the freeway, minute after minute ticking by, I started to panic I wasn’t going to make it in time. As soon as I arrived, I hastily pulled the car over, grabbed my photo gear, and literally sprinted down the beach to the castle turret. By some small miracle, I managed to set up the shot just in time to catch the last of the golden light illuminating the tower. A sense of relief washed over me when I checked the back of the camera and knew I had captured the shot I had been dreaming of in my head for so long.

This image personifies that glorious moment of clarity you reach once you know you’ve made it through a difficult time in your life. At one point you weren’t sure if you’d ever make it out, and yet somehow here you are, triumphant. You know that because you went through the darkness, you can appreciate the light even more now, and because of that, become grateful for the challenges you were forced to overcome. Resilient, you know you’ve emerged as a better version of yourself because of all that you went through and get to move forward with a new sense of who you are and what you are meant to do with the gift of life. A new beginning.

Do you stand up and fight, or surrender to the mercy of the powers that be? // This image wasn’t supposed to be created. On my month long travels through Peru and Costa Rica, every single plan I had to capture the next image for this collection ended in disaster. I almost didn’t make it on the trip at all because I ended up in the ER two days before my flight with a peritonsillar abscess the doctors were concerned was going to close my throat and stop my breathing. I went anyways, and just a few days into the trip, a herniated disc in my back slipped, and I ended up in some of the worst pain in my life. Unable to walk, I had to cancel the trek through the Andes mountains I had been planning for three years. 

Then in Costa Rica, unprecedented flash floods made it too dangerous to reach my planned photo locations. The day I was supposed to shoot this project, mudslides covered the roads leaving me stranded in the car for hours on end. Locals warned me a potential hurricane was arriving the next day, suggesting I should get out of the country as soon as I could. But I didn’t want to leave without capturing the final image I needed for this series. I searched Google Maps for accessible locations and found a waterfall I hadn’t heard of, so I decided to go check it out just hours before the flight I needed to catch in order to escape the hurricane. On the hike down the falls, I saw the waterfall for the first time, and immediately I knew this was where I would capture the next self portrait for this collection.

I made my way down to the base of the falls, slipping on mud as the rain from the storm began to fall. With a sense of urgency, I set up my tripod and camera, put on the crimson cape, and climbed out barefoot onto the slippery rocks beneath the falls. In the moment this image was taken, getting pummeled by the wind off the waterfall and surrounded by the power of nature, I suddenly knew that after a month of challenges and struggles, everything was going to be ok.

I stopped fighting against the powers working against me, and instead surrendered to them. I decided to put my trust in the universe that it was going to guide me to wherever I needed to be, and shape me into the person I wanted to become. And so, this piece represents not only accepting what has come, but releasing your control over it. On letting go.

So help me GOD. It's 2021 and I'm feeling majorly frustrated with my computer. It keeps crashing! It doesn't have any storage. It's not doing what I need it to do, and sadly I'm not in a position to change it. I couldn't even make art for a bit because it would just crash. Suddenly, I get some hope that maybe it'll work again. I want to make art but have no means to do it. I need something to work -- a foxhole prayer at least. Then finally, as I'm saving, So Help Me God, 2021 -- it works.

When there’s a mighty force of peril looming ahead, what will you do? How will you choose to face your demons?

“Against All Odds” is a photograph that has been six years in the making. It took three separate trips to the Oregon coast over the course of my entire photography career in order to finally capture this mythical giant wave. For this wave to appear, you need the perfect combination of a high surf warning, a winter storm, and the day’s high tide. This past winter, I monitored Oregon’s weather systems for months before finally seeing the storm warning I needed. Two days later, on the first day of the year, I drove 8 hours through the night alone to get there. On the way, my car slipped on black ice at 2am on the dark windy roads, and I lost control of the vehicle. By some miracle, I remained unscathed and continued on my journey to the wave.

The next day after little sleep, I went to the location and waited, watching the ocean for hours, only to find the waves weren’t crashing nearly high enough. My heart sunk, and I wondered if this trip would be another failed attempt at capturing this force of nature. I was about to leave when, by some stroke of luck, I overheard a park ranger say the wave was supposed to appear the next morning at the exact time of high tide during the peak of the storm.

And so I extended my trip another night, staying in a cheap motel in town. That night, the winter storm approached, so strong it knocked over power lines and I found myself alone in a black out. With the strong winds rattling the walls of the motel, I laid wide awake in bed, wondering if the old building was going to collapse on top of me.

In the morning, I returned to the cliffs alongside the ocean, set up my tripod and camera while getting battered by wind, rain, and hail, and waited again. Hours later, my eyes could hardly believe it when the giant wave collided with the rocks, crashing almost 100 feet high. By this point, I was soaked to the bone and my hands were so numb they could barely move, but somehow I managed to click the shutter and get the image I had been dreaming of for over half a decade.

This image was one of the most difficult to capture over my entire career thus far. It personifies the moment you realize you’re facing a challenge in life greater than you could ever imagine overcoming. And yet somehow, you know the only way out is to face it head on, with conviction. Against all odds.

The sunnies are a collection of 9,141 randomly generated NFTs built from 215+ unique traits. Some sunnies are rarer than others, but they all shine equally bright.

I was trekking through the monolithic peaks of the Italian Dolomites when I saw a jaw dropping sight. The clouds were crawling through the valley and enshrouding the tips of the mountains.

I couldn’t get a good vantage point from where I was on the hiking trail so I sent up my trusty little drone. The higher the drone went, the more mind blowing the view became. At last, my eye in the sky was exactly in line with the peaks and their crown of clouds.

I snapped the photo, brought my drone down and continued to explore this stunning corner of Europe. If you look at this photograph closely you can actually see the trail that I was hiking on at the base of the mountains.

This is a visually stunning image, but it also gets me thinking about how sometimes we tend to spend our days with our head up in the clouds. All it takes is to zoom out and focus to start seeing the bigger picture.

becoming the water that drenches every inch of you.

On June 4th, 2020, I witnessed a supercell near Martin, South Dakota that seemed to hug the ground at almost human height level.  Minutes passed as we watched this gentle beast slowly push across the gorgeous open prairie, and I attempted a shot I've never succeeded getting before: an uncropped vertical lightning image.  As the supercell moved closer to us, this beautiful scene was captured on camera, completing the uncropped, vertical image I was hoping for.

Is there anything better than the sound of the ocean? The waves crashing down on the sand, the birds singing in the fresh morning air, it’s magical. On a surreal sunrise in Laguna Beach we were treated to some unusual fog along with a lone early riser which all made for an incredibly unique image.

This photo was taken right before a defining moment in every rooftopper's career, the first time coming face to face with authority figures. While waiting for the consequences of my actions in an obscure back room of the hotel guarded by security, a million thoughts and questions ran through my head. I questioned my actions, I questioned if it was worth it and I questioned if I would ever do this again as much as security questioned me and my intentions. Little did I know that this would be the first of many interrogations over the span of years, interrogations that would propel me instead of deter me from the one thing I was told I shouldn't be doing.

First Contact is a series of artworks by Tom Noske

It follows the story of two beings who have come to earth and taken on a humanoid form. We first find them both in the process of coming to grips with this new form for the first time. They haven't harmed us, or given us any reason to believe that they will. But their familiarity frightens us.

The public have been warned not to engage, and the global authorities are mobilizing to take action. But we don't yet know what they are, what they want, or what they're capable of. All we know is that they look like us, they move like us, they even seem to feel like us, but they aren't us? Right? Leaving us with the dilemma of attempting to control something we think we recognize without fully understanding what "it" even is.

Like many other brown-skinned girls, I grew up feeling embarrassed about my blackness. For many years, I struggled to love my broad nose, my nappy hair, my oversized lips, my ashy brown skin. Having grown up in white spaces, I learnt to admire the eurocentric ideal - for me, white was king. 

I internalized the idea that being light-skinned or having straight hair was needed for me to be beautiful.

The irony is that in white spaces, I never felt enough because I was too dark. But in black spaces, I never felt accepted because I was too ‘white’. 

With time, education, and inner work, these notions started to fade away. I studied the places that I came from, the people that came before me and the systems that impoverished my sense of being. I now know that my feelings of being ‘lesser than’ were manufactured, and that my black - is beautiful. I wear my skin with pride for it carries my history and my legacy.

One of the most beautiful places on this planet. This is my final landscape image on the blockchain. The completion of my first series of NFTs. The closing of this first chapter. The beginning of something new.

Seasons. 

We go through many seasons during our lives. They can be defined on the calendar, stages of life in development, career growth, and personal growth. This typography work I did years ago represents Life and a favorite quote of mine: “There is no normal life, there’s just life.” We each face our own challenges and seasons we go through. It is just part of life. We all deal with things differently, and how we handle these things and the outlook we chose affects us.
