This stark depiction captures some of the romanticism with which war was still viewed by youths in the early 20th-Century, even in the years following WWI. Young Bobby Mallary was an avid reader and enjoyed drawing scenes of battle, his deft utility with the human figure apparent from a very early age.

The Western Front

Part of a series of paint and pastel abstract works on paper, this piece was created during Bob's formative studies in Mexico City. Though he initially made the journey to study and work with the Mexican muralists, his time there was remarkably fruitful and resulted in a broad range of work, from lithos and illustrations to large oil canvases. This piece is unusual in both style and medium, but is part of Bob's larger practice of exploring the boundaries of figurality.

In the 1920's the newly blossomed arena of aerial combat fascinated people of all ages, but especially young American boys like Bobby Mallary. He would later revisit the subject as an adult, creating etchings of child refugees' depictions of the aerial bombardments of civilian targets that took place first during the Spanish Civil War.

Bobby Mallary created an entire illustration set for the classic pirate tale Treasure Island. Most are largely figure work but this example shows the young artist of eleven years in fine form as he renders the complex form of a warship from the Age of Sail.

Avast!

Like many American boys growing up in the early 20th-Century, Robert Mallary had a fascination with war that manifests frequently in his earliest surviving drawings. This piece, created when he was eleven years old, depicts a soldier fighting in the trenches of Western Europe, likely based on one of the books he so avidly consumed.

Over the Top!

A SchMallary homage to the Chromie Squiggle, this piece uses animation to make more apparent the relationship between ten outputs from Robert Mallary's Tux series.

In October of 2021, Schmrypto acquired two shipping containers housing the collected unsold works of Robert Mallary, a pioneer in American digital art. This work comprises the bulk of Mallary's digital output during his time at Amherst from the sixties through the nineties and much more, spanning from childhood paintings created in 1925 to photoshop abstractions dating to the mid-90's. Much of the original code was also present, along with many thousands of pages of manuscripts. The Mallary Project is an effort to revive appreciation for the work of this visionary artist, and to eventually create a large body of CC0 art and code available to creators and artists of all types around the world. This is the first piece of media released by The Mallary Project, a 45 second short film attempting to give a taste of what is to come.

Who Is Robert Mallary?

This piece is the result of chroma shifting an animation composed of 11 pieces from Mallary's Series K, one of several Glyph outputs that create script-like forms. It is the second piece in an ongoing collaboration across the veil between Bob and Schmrypto.
