“Unsupervised — Machine Hallucinations — MoMA Dreams” is a series of algorithmic AI data paintings showcasing Refik Anadol’s unique collaboration with machine learning at the intersection of technology and aesthetics. Each image in the series displays a cluster of chosen “dream sequences,” as the artist goes through serendipitous allusions to modern visual expressions in the machine-mind. <br/>Collectors who acquire three artworks from the “Dreams” series as of December 1, 2021 will receive archival prints of their images shipped from the artist’s studio in early 2022. The prints will be 22" high and 12.4" wide.

What would you see and feel if you could look at someone’s heartbeat recorded in space? TRISH’s partnership with the recent Inspiration4 flight, the world’s first all-civilian mission into orbit, collected raw data from a series of experiments to discover what effects space had on the human body.

This dynamic data painting uses the heartbeat information collected from the 4 astronauts during the space mission by TRISH, hoping to bring more awareness to various health issues humans encounter both on Earth and in space. “Unsupervised — Data Universe — MoMA” is a global AI data painting that simulates a latent walk among the museum’s digitized collection. The artist and his team used MoMA archives to construct the seven dimensions of the artwork: x, y, z, r, g, b, and time. It combines Anadol’s vision of handling data within a universe that it creates for itself with his approach to data visualization’s latent space as a locus for never-ending, self-generating contemplation. Researcher Leland McInnes, the inventor of the UMAP technique that Anadol has used for “Unsupervised — Data Universe — MoMA” wrote, “I have always found beauty in mathematics, but to see what Refik has done with mathematics and these algorithms to create art is something else again: bringing together rich threads of information and data to weave amazing visual works. I never imagined that my work in mathematics could have such far reaching impacts.”
