Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What is an ENS username?

What is an ENS username?

The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a distributed, open, and extensible naming system based on the Ethereum blockchain. ENS maps human-readable usernames like username.eth to machine-readable identifiers such as Ethereum addresses, social media accounts, and other blockchain addresses.

Think about how a URL like www.coinbase.com is mapped to an IP address hosted by the Domain Name System (DNS). ENS does the same thing for crypto. Despite being based on Ethereum, ENS can also be used to track your wallet across non-Ethereum chains.

Are these just Coinbase accounts?

Are these just Coinbase accounts?

No. In fact, none of these profiles are Coinbase accounts. The profiles shown are public, decentralized profiles indexed from the ENS ecosystem and contain information added by the profile owners themselves. Since ENS profiles are pulled directly from the blockchain, they may contain sensitive or graphic content not suitable for all ages.

Why do I need a username?

Why do I need a username?

Ethereum wallet addresses are 42 digits long and difficult to remember. Having a web3 username, such as .eth or cb.id, allows you to send and receive crypto more easily, without needing to remember your wallet address. Additionally, your free cb.id username, provided by Coinbase Wallet, allows you to send and receive crypto across multiple chains.

What’s the difference between a .eth and cb.id username?

What’s the difference between a .eth and cb.id username?

A cb.id username is a type of ENS domain that also automatically forwards web users to that username's respective web3 profile on profile.coinbase.com. It’s also free for Coinbase Wallet users, whereas there’s a fee for claiming a .eth username, as well as a network (gas) fee. Both cb.id and .eth usernames are built on top of ENS infrastructure.

Additionally, getting a cb.id username does not prevent you from getting a .eth username from ENS and using it in your Coinbase Wallet.

How do I claim a cb.id username for free?

How do I claim a cb.id username for free?

You can claim your free cb.id username using the Coinbase Wallet mobile app or Chrome browser extension. For more detailed instructions, check out the help guide.

How do I buy a .eth username?

How do I buy a .eth username?

You can buy a .eth username by going to ens.domains using Coinbase Wallet. Please note that there are fees to obtain a .eth address from ENS. Alternatively, you can claim a free cb.id, which is a type of ENS domain, using Coinbase Wallet.

Your use of ENS may be subject to your acceptance of separate agreements with third parties. Coinbase is not a party to those agreements and is not responsible for ENS services.

Will I also get an onchain profile?

Will I also get an onchain profile?

Yes. Your ENS username is more than a nickname for your address. It can be customized with a profile picture and social media links to create a decentralized profile on Ethereum that only you can edit and manage.

Unlike Facebook, Twitter, or TikTok, your profile belongs to you and only you. That’s only possible with crypto.

Why is profile.coinbase.com in beta?

Why is profile.coinbase.com in beta?

Last year, we announced our partnership with ENS to create cb.id usernames, a free-to-claim web3 username, in an effort to make web3 identity more accessible to all. We’re taking another step in that journey by releasing web profiles to beta. Using profile.coinbase.com, anyone can check out the first version of profiles on Coinbase and explore web3 identity more freely.

Beta testers will be able to find, explore, and discover web3 profiles, whether they have cb.id or .eth username or not. We have other features planned to improve upon our beta experience. Stay tuned as we gradually add features and continue to make web3 more accessible to everyone.
