About the song...

I write a lot of songs about women. This is obviously another one of those. But this one just felt like a vibe from the first vocal that I laid down. I had fun experimenting with the sound and the mix and wanted to make something that really felt like an experience. 

Anytime I send someone my music I always tell them to get a good pair of headphones or speakers. Obviously not everyone is able to but if you are, that's the best way to experience this.

I spent a long time away from [recording] music. The past few years I’ve been experiencing a lot of loss and change and I just wasn’t in a space where I felt inspired or able to make music anything close to a priority.

In hindsight I feel like I needed that time. Time to rediscover myself. Time to heal. Time to step back and decide what I wanted my life to look like.

Fast forward to March of this year and for some reason it seemed like that fog that I was in had started to clear up. I started recording again for the first time in what felt like forever. I never stopped writing, but I started to realize that the recording process is just as important and that was something that I had been out of touch with. I was new to Ableton but I just kept recording + watching YouTube videos + focusing on getting better.

Fast forward again.

By the end of May I had 30+ songs. Some were structured and some were more like thoughts of mine that just happened to include music but I was just happy to be making music again.

It eventually got to a point where I asked myself… OK what am I doing with these? In this era am I really about to space out a bunch of songs as singles? Then on top of that it’s not like I just stopped making music. I am still writing and recording daily. And yeah these are cool… but this neeeeeeew sh*t though… Yeah this new sh*t is waaaay better. Those songs are old now. Too old…

And that’s where the concept of Before They Expire came from…

I feel like as musicians/creatives we tend to only want to focus on our newest work. We create, fall in love, then we create and fall in love again and the cycle continues. It’s so easy to start believing that just because a song is old to us it must be old to everyone else. Then we end up sitting on these songs until the point that we feel like they’ve “expired”.

F*ck that.

I decided that I’m not going to do that anymore. Everything is coming out. Everything. And this is the format I want to use. An album with absolutely no concept. Just the music. The moments. The emotions. The experiences. Of course I will have more conceptual bodies of work (spoiler alert… got one on the way), but in the event that too many of these songs are floating around on my hard drive with no home, I’m releasing another volume of Before They Expire.

For now here's Volume 1. Enjoy.

Releasing this song feels like a necessary detour. I try my best to be as vulnerable as possible in my music but this was something I didn’t know how to say even though I knew it was necessary. I am many things. A man, a son, a brother, a friend, a musician. But above all else I am a father. That is my ultimate purpose. To lead by example for my sons. To teach them how to maneuver in a world not inherently designed for them to win. To break the cycle.

My journey throughout Web 3 thus far has been a time of affirmation (shoutout to Scolla.) It’s been a time of growth, learning, and healing. It’s been a time of not always doing the easiest (or most politically correct) thing, but having faith that it is the right thing as I continue forward.

I feel like I’m at the crossroad of stepping into my future and healing from my past, all while remaining present. I am working through my struggles in realtime - through music - and I hope that anyone who reads this understands that I am not defined by my circumstances, and neither are you. This has been a season that I feel is coming to a close. So although I am excited to share this piece of my story with you, I am equally as excited to have you with me as the rest of the story unfolds.

One thing that Web 3 has taught me is to better vocalize my needs. To not be afraid to say that I am not ok, or that I need help because we are not meant to walk alone.

I have been dealing with a traumatic situation involving my children and my family and I am thankful that I have the love and support to be able to say that I need help as I give this offering. I called this a necessary detour because that’s exactly how it feels. Like stopping for gas on a road trip. Knowing that this path is meant for me but that I had to take a second to address my needs and decompress before driving again.

So to anyone reading this, thank you for supporting me. Thank you for continuing to uplift me and remind me of my worth in the times when I may forget. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to support my family by doing something I love. And thank you for helping me break the cycle.

We all process our trauma differently, and the past few years of my life have been quite traumatic. On one hand I understand that I am not defined by these traumas. They are a part of my journey but they do not make me who I am. Yet, on the other hand I understand that in order for me to heal I need to address them. To process them. To find acceptance. To find forgiveness. To find peace.

The fact that songwriting is a gift is not something that’s lost on me. I am grateful every day to be able to express myself through music in a way that helps me heal. I don’t know a better way to communicate. I don’t know a better form of therapy than being completely vulnerable: on record. 

I wrote “Be Here Long” at one of the lowest points in my life. At the time I didn’t realize how many emotions I was suppressing and how much of an impact it was having on me. It’s funny how art reflects life because I feel like I was in autopilot both mentally and musically. I didn’t need to force this record and truthfully, I don’t feel like [I] wrote it; it wrote itself. I just remember pacing around my apartment in tears and finally looking down at a finished song.

One section in particular resonated with me at a core level:

“You halfway through a sentence, and it’s harder to keep dreaming.
I’m halfway through a sentence, and it’s harder to keep reading.
Letters feel like packages whenever I’m receiving… heavy.

I feel the distance, the dissonance
The disconnect from your innocence
The tears, rain…
The pain in your eyes, the resemblance
Liquor in my cup, a deliverance
And liquor on the ground in remembrance”

It reminded me that we’re all fighting our individual battles. Together. We are all fighting to maintain our light. To keep going on days where it may seem hopeless. To find love in all that we do. I am not physically with my brother but his battle is my battle. His light is my light. His peace is my peace. And we will find it together.

I thought a lot about what I wanted my initial offering for this platform to be. Full transparency, it gave me a lot of anxiety trying to pick the “perfect” song. I never set out to make any type of record. I just create what I feel called to create. But I found hope in this record. And that’s something I’d love to contribute to my people in any way possible.

I love you guys. Thank you for changing my life. Thank you for reminding me of my worth when I forget. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for supporting me. Thank you for uplifting me. Thank you for showing up for me. Thank you for helping me provide for my family. Thank you. For everything.
